The Summer Olympic Games are by far the most important sporting celebration worldwide. They are held every 4 years and are followed by millions of spectators across the globe. Since Athens 1896, the Olympic Games have been constantly evolving, gaining popularity over time. The number of sports events, participating nations, and athletes has increased considerably since the first games, as well as the number of viewers. But these games are not only about sport; during their history, the Olympic Games have also been marked by political tensions, historical events, and feminist demands. This article briefly reviews the most important historical facts and anecdotes of the modern Olympic Games with the help of Plotly interactive visualizations. 🏃

Host Cities of the Olympic Games

The Summer Olympic Games were held for the first time in 1896 in Athens. Since then, the Summer Olympics have been hosted in 23 different cities in 19 countries.
